Crispy Sambal Bawang Tau Kwa with Steakhouse Classic Dry Rub

Sometimes, the simplest ingredients make the most satisfying meals. If you're looking for a quick appetiser, side dish, or protein-packed snack, this Crispy Sambal Bawang Tau Kwa is a recipe you'll want to make again and again.

Golden pan-fried tau kwa is cooked with fragrant garlic before being tossed in our Nusantara Sambal Bawang, creating a savoury, spicy, and aromatic coating that pairs perfectly with rice or as a delicious side dish. Finished with a light sprinkle of Steakhouse Classic Dry Rub, this recipe is proof that everyday ingredients can become something extraordinary.

Best of all, it's ready in under 15 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 blocks tau kwa (firm tofu), cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 1-2  tbsp cooking oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, diced
  • 2–3 tbsp Nusantara Sambal Bawang
  • ½ tsp Steakhouse Classic Dry Rub
  • Spring onions, sliced (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tau Kwa

Pat the tau kwa dry using paper towels. This helps achieve a crispier exterior when frying.

Cut into cubes or triangles, depending on your preference.

Step 2: Fry the Tau Kwa

Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat.

Add the tau kwa and pan-fry until golden brown on all sides, about 6–8 minutes.

Step 3: Cook the Garlic

Push the tau kwa to one side of the pan.

Add the sliced garlic and cook until lightly golden and fragrant, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

Step 4: Add the Sambal

Add the Sambal Bawang to the pan and stir everything together.

Cook for another 1–2 minutes, allowing the sambal to coat every piece of tau kwa while the garlic infuses the sauce with even more aroma.

Step 5: Finish

Sprinkle the Steakhouse Classic Dry Rub over the tau kwa and toss everything together one final time. Finish with spring onions and sesame seeds for extra flavour and texture if desired.

Serve immediately while hot.

Why It Works

The Steakhouse Classic Dry Rub adds layers of savoury herbs, garlic, black pepper, and smoky spices that enhance the natural flavour of the tau kwa.

Sambal Bawang then brings everything together with its bold blend of fresh chillies, garlic, and aromatic shallots. Every bite delivers crispy texture, savoury seasoning, and a satisfying spicy finish.
